Somewhere I belong
Chapter 4

The day had quickly turned into night as the sun disappeared and the sky became dark, with the moon and the stars glowing faintly as they joined the night.
She found herself staring sleepily at them, subconsciously connecting other stars together with imaginary lines as she lay awake next to the sleeping giant.
She cast a glance over to look at him.  It was strange how she found his presence odd yet safe at the same time.
With a light sigh, her mind started to get heavier as sleep called to her.  She snuggled up close to the giant.  It had been quite the day so she was tired.
Looking up at the giant with sleepy eyes she gave a lazy smile.
“Good night Ruban,” she said, not expecting much of a response as she closed her eyes and fell into a comfortable sleep, with the giant breathing gentle breathes beside her.

The next morning as she woke up to what looked like a lovely sunny day, she found herself looking beside her, expecting the giant to still be there.
Instead she saw nothing, just some pushed down grass in the place he had slept.
She found herself blinking in confusion as she sat up from her spot, looking to her left.
“Ruban?”
Where did he go? She turned to her right.  “Ruban?”
Did he have somewhere important to go? Did he...leave her?
She frowned at the thought; she didn’t like that thought at all.
She stood up to look for him. He couldn’t be too hard to find, he was a giant!  But then again maybe he did leave her...
She didn’t know why it suddenly bothered her that he was gone. She wanted him gone before, right?
But now she suddenly didn’t like the idea of being alone.
She looked around more uncertainly now, as her thoughts wondered of being on her own again.  Suddenly a thump came from behind her.
Surprised, she screeched and lashed out as she spun around and came across two familiar large blue eyes. She calmed down a bit once she saw who it was.
“Ruban!” she cried out in relief, while putting her hand over her racing heart. She had no idea how he snuck up behind her like that but she was glad to see him.
“Where did you go?” she had to ask, arms flailing wildly.
To answer her question he carefully brought his closed hands and opened them to show her...fruit! Yes, fruit!
He had gone out to collect fruit for them.
She felt herself calm down completely.
So he didn’t actually leave her all on her own; she had been worrying over nothing.
Ruban, being concerned about why she had jumped out like that, whimpered slightly in worry, wanting to know if she was alright.
She smiled slightly to reassure him. “No, I’m alright” she quickly said.
The giant still held a worried look on his face but didn’t want to bother her, so he offered her the fruit instead.
Smiling a bit more brightly, she carefully went over to take some fruit from his hands; she still wasn’t quite used to being around them yet.
Maybe someday she would fully trust him, since he seemed to be so trusting of her, which made her slightly confused. He only just met her, why did he trust her so much?
Taking an apple and a plum, she bit into one of them in thought.
Seeing that she had made her choices, Ruban took the rest for himself to eat. He ate them as if they were like candy.
It made her wonder about how a giant’s digestive system worked...not that she really wanted to know!
So she simply just enjoyed her food.
Once done, she went over to the lake to wash her face and have a drink of water.
One thing she had learned during her first few years of being on her own was that you should always take advantage of your resources while you still have them.
She could feel the eyes of the giant watching her as she drank the water. Feeling hydrated, she turned around to face him. But as she was turning around she accidentally lost her footing on the lake’s muddy shore and fell in the water.
“Ahhh!” she shrieked as she went down with a splash. She and her dress were now soaked.
In slight panic Ruban quickly rushed over to help her out. He reached to scoop her out of the water.
She shivered slightly as she was brought out of the cold water, the air now feeling chilly since she was now wet. A great way to start the day!
She felt him lift her closer, and she looked up into his blue eyes. He showed some concern as he felt her shaking.
“I-I’m okay,” her voice quivered, trying to let him know that she was alright.
Ruban seemed to doubt that from the way she was trembling, so with careful, gentle hands he cupped them around her and brought them closer to his chest in hopes of keeping her warm.
Which it did, along with her cheeks as she felt the blood in her face heat up, blushing. He seemed to be very sweet at times. And for some reason it caused her to have these strange feelings that she couldn’t really recall having before in her life.
What were these strange feelings? She didn’t know.
It sort of made her dizzy to even try and think of it.  Very strange indeed!  Maybe she would figure it out later.
Hearing a whine, she looked up at him to see him looking at her curiously, eyebrows raised. He must have wanted to know why her face was suddenly red.
She blushed a little more from him noticing. For a giant you think he wouldn’t be able to see something like a blush, but he did.
She looked away as he leaned closer to get a better look at her.
“Y-you can put me down now,” she told him casting a glance up at his looming form, while pointing to the ground hoping to make the message clear.
Understanding what she wanted, Ruban carefully lowered his hands and set her down on the forest floor.
Feeling happy that she was back on solid ground again (and that she wasn’t blushing anymore), she looked back up to smile at him, when something caught her attention in the sky. In the distance she could see some black rain clouds. They didn’t look like they were doing much but she could tell that they were coming this way.
“Looks like we’ll get some showers tonight,” she predicted, having had some experience in telling what the weather was going to do.
Following her gaze, Ruban also stared at the clouds. She could see a light frown spoil his features as he gazed at them.
She found herself tilting her head to the side as she looked up at him.
“You okay?” she found herself asking. Usually it seemed to be his eyes that asked her that, even without words.
The giant, hearing her voice, looked away from the sky and turned his attention toward her.
She could see from his eyes that he was a little uneasy, she didn’t know why though.  But it sort of made her a little uneasy too.
If the giant was worried about something, shouldn’t she be too?  Guess she would find out pretty soon.

The clouds had come quicker than she thought as large raindrops began to fall, quickly drenching the world below, including her and Ruban. Even with her experience in predicting weather, there was always that once in a while glitch in getting it wrong.
Currently she and Ruban were getting soaked to the bone.
They would need to find some shelter (even though she knew it was useless).  She went over to Ruban, who was currently in a sitting position, and tugged on his brown shorts to get his attention.
“Come on Ruban.  Let’s go,” she said a bit urgently, wanting to try and get them both out of the rain.
Ruban seemed a little reluctant to move from his spot but complied as he moved to get up.
Just as he was about to stand up, suddenly from a ways away a crack of lightning flashed in the sky, soon followed by a loud roar of thunder.
Frightened, Ruban let out a yelp as he jumped, giving the earth a good tremble as he landed.
She stumbled a bit as the ground shook, and landed on her butt. Was this going to be a common thing every time he jumped?
Rubbing the aches and pains from her behind, she glanced up to look at the giant.
He was sitting with his arms covering his head with his eyes knitted shut.
She raised her eyebrows at him.
Was he...scared?
Her question seemed to be answered as another lightning bolt flashed through the sky and Ruban let out another yelp, trembling a bit.
She frowned as she watched him.  Who knew a giant would be scared of thunderstorms?
She could hear Ruban let out a series of whimpers as the storm continued on its rage.
Wanting to somehow comfort him in his distress, she slowly and approached his large shaking form.
“Ruban?” she softly spoke to him.
She wasn’t really sure that he had heard her, when one of his eyes opened to look at her. His blue eye seemed to really stand out in the dark grey rainy sky.
With a hesitant hand she slowly reached out and touched his knee, and started patting it.
“I-it’s okay, I'm here,” she reassured him softly.
With that said, and a quivery lip, the giant soon turned to lie on his stomach and then held her close to his cheek in some form of a hug.
It felt kind of awkward to her; she could feel her face blushing again, but quickly accepted it as she started to pet his cheek. He was still shaking, but didn’t seem as bad now.
“See, it’ll be alright,” she spoke as she continued to softly stroke his cheek.
Another thunder boomed.
“S...Stel-la,” Ruban’s voice sounded hoarse.
“Yeah that’s it. See there’s nothing to be afra—“
Wait! Hold on a moment, what did he say?
Stella looked up at him in surprise.
“...What did you say?” she spoke her thoughts out loud.
Ruban stared at her for a moment before moving his lips and saying.
“Ste...Stel-la,” repeating her name, his voice was soft and hoarse from lack of usage. But still...wow! She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“Good gravy, you can talk!” she suddenly burst out, kind of randomly.
The giant blinked and raised his eyebrows at her unexpected outburst of surprise. He had only said her name!
More lightning flashed, causing Ruban to flinch.
Calming down a bit, but still in slight shock, she let out a sigh as she resumed petting his cheek, trying her best to sooth him even with their size difference.
Ruban, seeming to calm down, lightly nuzzled her with his nose as he settled down.
“Stel-la...” he said softly, as he stared at her with kind, gentle eyes.
Not having much to protest about, she also settled down and stared up into his eyes, a small tired smile grazing her lips.
And there they stayed for what seemed like a long time, simply staring into each other’s eyes. They didn’t even seem to notice the storm or the rain.
They stayed like that till sleep finally claimed them.
They both fell into a deep, peaceful slumber, feeling safe in each other’s presence.
Heres the next chapter to my story hope you like it!
